Customizing: Captain Kirk with ripped shirt

He's finished! And I am pretty proud how natural the chest looks. I think it really looks like it always has been under that shirt.

According to this list this particular shirt rip happened only three times in the whole series! http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/database/kirks_shirt.htm

I'll include all pictures step by step. See all explanations under the cut.

First step: Cut away the shirt. The shirt is made from rubber / gum, so that was easy. I had hoped to just let it hang but it was way too stiff. For the picture, I had to hold it down, otherwise it would have gone up again:

This is what he looks like under it:

My first attempt of forming the chest. You will agree that it was way too much and too big and did not look good. So I took off some layers and made it smaller:

Second attempt on chest - much better. I also had to smooth away a few of the creases on the shoulder, which are from the shirt but I wanted a naked shoulder. I filled the rest up with Milliput:

Now came the tricky part - painting. I had bought skin color but of course it was way too pink and did not match with the face. So I mixed in some beige / light brown, leftovers from when I repainted the Stargate desert camo uniforms But then it was too grey, so I added in a bit of yellow as well - and it was perfect:

I'm really marvelling at how good it looks. Usually, when staring at it too much, you start to doubt, but when I just pass by and he is lying on the kitchen table - perfect.

While I was at it, I also freshened up the gold. Can you spot the difference?

This is the famous cloth, the perfect yellow. It is 26 years old. In May 1989 I was chosen (together with some more kids from our school) to go to Berlin, for a three days celebration called Pfingsttreffen. Basically a meeting of young people from all over Eastern Germany, with fun and music and concerts and all kind of nice stuff. It was great fun but we had to pay for it by taking part in a demonstration, as this was also a political meeting after all. We were given those clothes (I also have a blue, red and white one) for waving while marching. I've kept it all these years, thinking one day I may have need for it. And now the time has come!

I glued the arm piece upside down and then turned it over, that way it looks like it is really hanging down:

I had thought the cloth would hang naturally but sadly it was too stiff, and kept sticking up:

So I had to fold it and glue it into place:

I think you should strip him completely and make him anatomically correct. :D

Seriously, you did a great job!!!

After this, I think a full naked chest really could not be that complicated? Especially if I use this figure as a base:

Next project, then! Not sure about the anatomically correct part though LOL If I want to stay true to Shatner's anatomy, do you know I need to make his cheest, arms and legs very hairy? I mean, look at this?

Apparently he needed to shave his chest for Star Trek, as it was deemed too sexy with hair LOL

And thank you very much, I am really happy how he turned out.

Appropriate icon is appropriate ;)

O.M.G. ROTFLMAO! I didn't know that pic existed!! I think showing less (like the chest) is more. You did a wonderful, wonderful job.

And the Kirk from Mirror, Mirror, one of my favorite episodes!!

This picture is from "Battle of the Network Stars", Rick also once participated in this. Lots of fun ;) Here are some Shatner clips: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ntsj2voZJBg

The show I watched from 1978 also had a very young Robin Williams which had come to fame with "Mork from Ork" Awww.

Thank you!

The chest looks amazing. If I didn't know better, I'd think the body looked like this from the beginning.

And what a nice way to use some old material :)

Thank you! It really does look like it was always there. I am glad I went back and changed the original chest though. It would have been too thick and too much. I had already finished and let it dry when I came back to the kitchen (searching for something to drink) and I was not happy with it.

I'm a packrat, I keep everything. I once did a picture with all the plastic leftovers from Kinder surprise eggs: http://dieastra.livejournal.com/8199.html

Came out really good. Clever with the paint-mixing. Nailed it.

Thank you very much! I'm really proud of it. I showed it to co-workers today LOL

They liked it, too, right? Are they into these things?

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2015-08-25 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's say they endure my enthusiasm ;)
One guy (younger than me) is into Star Trek and also Stargate and so I show him my collections in a bit more detail and sometimes we have a geek talk. The older ones are more amused but still impressed with what I do.

And then there was the woman who in the middle of me showing the Sherlock figures enthusiastically, asked me if I could also iron. I was so perplexed, I had no answer as I had no idea what this had to do with anything? And her reply (recently divorced and in love with a new guy) was: "Men like women who can iron and cook" or something like that. And she really isn't that much older than me actually.

I have no idea how she got the impression that I even was on the search for a man. I'm still puzzled.

I'll bet she was thinking that you need a man in your life so you don't have to play with kid's toys. There are women like that. My friends think I'm crazy because I say I'm a fan girl. That I read fan fiction. That I love a certain tv show that's not even on anymore. People just don't get things, sometimes. Their loss. :)

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2015-08-26 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Life would be so boring without fandom and the internet! Only working, watching TV and sleeping. And ultimately dying. Boring.

Yeah, but I was so puzzled and it came so out of the blue, I literally was speechless and had no response. The right response probably would have been saying that I am asexual and thanks, don't need a husband. Maybe I would have done that if we had been alone, but there were like six more people standing around us and I don't think this is a topic for the workplace. And if hey haven't figured it out by now, I can't really help them.

In general, I am of the opinion that we won't have true equality as long as it is expected from gay people to announce to everyone that they are gay. Why? Why not just living your life, and casually mentioning your significant other, and let the others draw their own conclusions. If hey have questions, they can ask. Like Matt Bomer did it, in thanking his husband publically after receiving an award. There had been rumors and pictures before, and so this drew a bit of attention, which surprised him. He said he just did what everyone would have done in that situation.

I absolutely agree. What business is it of anyone's? I see on Tumblr so much of people labeling themselves, and calling out those who use the wrong label, or don't even know all the labels. So what? How does this foster tolerance and acceptance. There are people who label themselves by the results of I think the Meyers/Briggs psychology test. I am entx or netz something. I don't even know what that means. I don't actually think there are x's or z's in that, but not the point. Let's differentiate ourselves from others with our labels. I do not get this at all. People puzzle me. I'm so glad I'm not one. Well, my kids tell me I'm from another planet, and sometimes I think it must be true. LOL

Thinking about it, the labeling thing is just another way to feel superior to someone else, and open the door to justify prejudice and hatred. Why is it then so popular? We are regressing at an alarming rate, it seems. I frequently find myself thinking, this is not the America I was raised to believe it is. I thought we had made such progress in combating prejudice, and bigotry, and racism, but it turns out it was just politically incorrect for awhile and had gone underground, where it's been festering like a cancer for years. Suddenly, it is becoming acceptable again. This troubles me so much, and combined with the horrific behavior of our police in recent times, is really scary, too. I was raised to believe that the police are your friends, there to protect you. Who you go to when you are lost or in trouble. Now I think you should just run the other way when you see them. What has happened to my country?
