AFT Doctor Who: The Doctors at the 50th anniversary special

So yesterday was the big day, and of course my Doctors wanted to come to the cinema as well to see their show on the big screen. I had to smuggle them in in my bag, as I hadn't bought a ticket for them. Then again, I probably could have, as old as they are, they could have gotten pensioner's discount. Anyway, here are some pictures of our journey to Chemnitz!

I already started to regret taking them before we even had taken off. They were fighting for the best seat in the car like children.

Eleven: "Adi, stop making yourself bigger than you actually are! Some of us also want some space here!"

 photo PB230001-1.jpg

Ten: "Stop tickling me all the time, Astra!"

Astra: "Just trying to help!"

 photo PB230003-1.jpg

Finally the dispute was settled and we could start. Didn't take long though before there was whining from the back seat.

Eleven: "Are we there yet? How much longer?"

Ten: "Should have taken the TARDIS, that would have been quicker. Could you get a move on, I desperatedly need to pee!"

Astra: "You should have gone before we started, what are you, Five?!?"

 photo PB230006-1.jpg

Finally we arrived in Chemnitz, and while searching for the cinema, we came about some of the sights of this city. This is one very famous thing, the head of Karl Marx. It's bigger on the outside. The monument also says "Workers of the world, unite!" in several languages. Why they put it actually into Chemnitz is unknown, because Karl Marx never has once set foot into this city. But the people living there have adopted it as their own now, and you can buy it in all sorts of shapes, including one made of chocolade. Nom-nom.

 photo PB230010-1.jpg

Eleven: "Oh no, it's the tickely-tickly hand again!"

 photo PB230021.jpg

Ten: "Look behind you, could we use this TARDIS to escape it?"

 photo PB230023.jpg

Eleven: "Nope, this is just a stone relievi, stupid!"

Ten: "So, what's this then?"

 photo PB230024.jpg

Astra: "This, if you must know, is the Stone Wood. Those are real trees which are millions and billions of years old and were fossilized. They are pretty famous and unique."

Eleven: "Boring! Can we take a picture in front of it?"

 photo PB230028.jpg

Astra: "Let me try some camera settings to get the best light of both you and the wood."

Eleven: "Let's sit down while she does that."

Astra: *exasperated sigh*

 photo PB230044.jpg

Finally we made it to the cinema and settled in our seats. But if I thought now they would be quiet, I needed to think again.

Eleven: "When is it finally going to start, I am running out of Popcorn here!"

Ten: "Didn't you hear what Strax just said? Popcorn can feel pain!"

Eleven: *bites into his Popcorn and makes crunchy noises* "Whoodidyajustsay?"

Ten: "We forgot our 3-D-glasses. Can you go and get us some Astra?"

 photo PB230071.jpg

After that the movie finally started, and it was phantastic. But you probably know that, as you have seen it yourself. Yesterday we did history, people, we got the Guiness Book award for the largest ever simulcast of a TV drama, following a global campaign from BBC Worldwide that saw "The Day of the Doctor" broadcast in 94 countries across 6 continents.

Looking forward to the 100th special in 12-D. I will be 90 at the time, so it is possible.

Disclaimer: None of those dialogues did actually happen. They are dolls after all, they cannot talk. Ow! Stop hitting me, Eleven! And you Ten, stop sulking! I promise you won't have to wear the rain coats ever again!

Aw, I love the photostory!

I was talking to Scottie about your entry and the 100th episode, he said that the 100th will have to win an award for being the largest interplanentary simulcast. xD Then the 200th will have to be intergalactic. ehehehe!

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-24 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehe, I said something similar recently! Our Facebook group calls itself "global Torchwood group" and I said, we need a fan in the ISS or when the mission to Mars starts, so we can call it interplanetary. Intergalactic would be something else though! (and you can't expect them all understanding English. You would need a TARDIS for translation)

*giggles* They're a handful!

Glad you all enjoyed the 50th anniversary!

Also, those fossilised trees are really cool!

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-24 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
They certainly are! And they like to argue.

Yeah, it was wonderful! Just watched it again, as it was repeated at BBC3.

I remember those trees from my childhood when I was the last time in Chemnitz. Back then they were laying around outside, now they are under a roof. But you don't need to pay entry to see them.

Can you please tell me if there is anything odd about this entry? Like, bolded text which shall not be bolded? Because in the e-mail notification, I see bolded text, but not when I look at the actual entry. Just wondering if I need to change something.
bk_forever: (Film Star Smile)

[personal profile] bk_forever 2013-11-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
No, everything looks perfectly normal to me, no bold text anywhere. How strange that your email shows it differently.

Yes, I watched the repeat tonight as well. It was just as brilliant the second time around!

[identity profile] geekslave.livejournal.com 2013-11-24 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Those fossilized trees look amazing.

LOL at the dolls' adventure. They look so cute in their raincoats.

I don't think I've seen your 11 doll before. He seems really, really tan. Has he been laying out in the sun? ;)

Stacey

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
LOL the raincoats are simple plastic bags which I cut at one side and used the corner as a hood. Works well! It was such a grey rainy day.

Yeah, somehow I missed doing a proper "introducing Eleven" post. He was firstly featered in the garden swing pictures here: http://dieastra.livejournal.com/77198.html

People have commented on his tan then also, but in real life he actually looks ashen, grey. As if he was sick. I think they overdid it a bit there with the color. It's possible the pictures of Matt Smith they used as a reference, which also were kinda greyish.

[identity profile] geekslave.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's interesting that it looks grey in real life. Would never have imagined that.

Stacey

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not too bad actually. I guess it is a quite realistic skin color. It just sticks out so much since his hands are simple plastic and much more pink. They should have matched it better.

[identity profile] keyjahn.livejournal.com 2013-11-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
From 1953 to 1990 Chemnitz was known as Karl-Marx-Stadt, so of course you have MArx there...and I enjoyed it a lot....I watched it in 3D in a cinema, too

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It was, but it still doesn't make sense. They just chose this city randomly. It would have made sense with Trier for example, where he was born. Or London, where he lived for long ;)

It was wonderful to see it on the big screen! Also the 3-D worked well, it was not overdone. It's great to think that everywhere in the world fans were doing the same in the same minute. I hear for Australia it was very early in the morning.

[identity profile] keyjahn.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, but Trier was not East Germany!
^^

and yes, it was a great feeling...to be part of it...

a friend had seat K9!

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL No it wasn't.

Were you in Chemnitz as well? I am from Dresden actually, where even two cinemas played it - but they weren't on the list originally so we already had tickets when they got announced. They really should have made their mind up earlier. We even asked the CinemaXX and they said they don't see any interest. The "not interested" bought 175 seats in the first airing and 90 seats in the second airing...

[identity profile] keyjahn.livejournal.com 2013-11-27 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, I live in Berlin.
here 2 big Cinemas showed it. There was such a demand that they both added a 2nd viewing for 22:45 (I actually went to this one, cause the ones 20:45 were nearly sold out and the rest tickets were not good seats)
When I got my ticket and a day later my friend's friend wanted to come along along, we were lucky to get the ticket beside us and they added another screening in one of the smaller screens.

So Berlin had 5 viewing and as far as I know, all were nearly sold out and we had the huge screens (490 seats). Actually Catching fire, was had to go to the smaller ones, we needed the space!

So I would say, alone in Berlin about 2.000 people watched it in cinema and a lot more at home on FOX.

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2014-03-01 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I counted, in the whole of Germany 37 cinemas took part, and many had second viewings as well. It was amazing to see where suddenly all those Doctor Who fans came from! Where are they all hiding? Everyone thinks he is the only one watching over here.

We also often now go to the CinemaXX for all the National Theatre stuff, "Frankenstein" with Benedict Cumberbatch or "MacBeth" with Kenneth Branagh or "Coriolanus" with Tom Hiddleson and Mark Gatiss. Those all were wonderful experiences.

[identity profile] keyjahn.livejournal.com 2014-03-01 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in Berlin we actually have a fb group with monthly meetings...
But it's still cool, if you are in the train and see someone watching the a christmas special (6th new season) on his tablet or find a sonic screwdriver on someones desk at work

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2014-03-01 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea that my friend, whom I only knew from Wise Guys and a cappella concerts, watched it until she saw my FB picture and asked how I came to a picture with David Tennant. And I wondered how she knew who he was!

But at a concert, you are not suddenly going: "BTW, do you know Doctor Who?" Without this, we might have never found out!

It's great that you have a group with meetings. We also meet from time to time in Saxony, just not as official.

[identity profile] keyjahn.livejournal.com 2014-03-02 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, start one! There always has to be someone to start something great!
^_^

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2014-03-02 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, to be honest, I don't like rigid set regular times. We just meet once in a while, when there is an occasion, like a concert or the 50th anniversary, or we go to the Leipzig Zoo together... very informal.

And of course me and some of the girls playing with the action figures together. Always great fun.

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)

Was habt Ihr denn gemacht?

ext_33871: (Default)

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-26 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)

Good thing you didn't get thrown out of the theater with 10 and 11 yakking away!

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL True! Maybe that was because only I can hear what they say?

[identity profile] sharp2799.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
*giggles* I can just hear them!

I loved the show. Loved it. I watched the first airing on BBCA so I was watching with everyone! Then of course I watched it again...and again....

:D

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad I got the voices right ;) The two of them working together in the movie must have rubbed off on me LOL

It was wonderful. You missed the 3-D effects in TV sadly. When they showed that painting from the site and it was in 3-D as well... also, at the beginning we got Matt Smith welcoming us to the 100th special in 12-D LOL Was that in the TV as well?

[identity profile] owensheart.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Aww this was lovely. what fun. amazing sights too.

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! We had a nice day, even though it was grey and rainy.

[identity profile] cowgrrl.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You and 10 and 11 (and the adipose) were so lucky to be able to watch this on the big screen for the simulcast! And the raincoats are just too cute!!! (And chocolate Karl Marx too, what a world we live in!) :)

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-25 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The map with the screenings world wide tells me there was one in IMAX at 175 Tremont St. You did not know about this?

I really love that it was at the same time around the world. I hear Australians had to go to the cinmea at 7 AM... and in Russia it was like 1 AM... and in the US obviously in the afternoon.

The raincoats are just plastic bags which I cut open at one side. They worked surprisingly well!

Well, they don't have many sights in Chemnitz (which formerly was named Karl-Marx-Stadt) so they need to make the best out of the ones they have ;)

[identity profile] cowgrrl.livejournal.com 2013-11-26 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
The Boston Common cinema on Tremont street only has screenings tonight. They did not have anything the day of the simulcast. I know several people going tonight, and if they'd had a screening in 2D I would have gone to see it tonight. But I cannot handle 3D--it makes me really ill.

So, no there was nothing in the Boston area but I was very happy watching it at home with a friend. I thought it was so great to have it at the same time worldwide, and even better, for once there were no commercial interruptions on BBCAmerica because of the simulcast. That station is HORRIBLE with their constant commercial interruptions!

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-26 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Aaah! I only checked the town but not the actual air date. Yeah, I heard of some US showings at Monday evening. Why not Sunday evening though, I wonder? Or Saturday evening? Why did they wait till Monday when everyone already had seen the spoilers in the internet? Since that was the reason about the simulcast airing, to avoid spoilers. They should do that more often. Maybe not at the same hour but at least the same day. For TV series, I mean.

I haven't seen many 3-D movies yet (I think the first was "Fright Night" with David Tennant) and the look at London from the air and also the Gallifreyan picture did look really great. As did the cleavage of Elisabeth 1st LOL

I have heard with some Doctor Who episodes they even air them faster than they normally are, they speed them up to get the commercials in, so Eleven talks even faster than usual. I have a hard drive recorder now and once accidentally pushed the wrong button and that must have been exactly what those episodes sound like LOL

Near the end we lost the picture, we only had sound left. Several people got out their sonic screwdrivers, it was hilarious. Thankfully someone then came and we saw the whole scene again so we did not miss anything.

[identity profile] cowgrrl.livejournal.com 2013-11-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure everyone going to the cinema tonight will have already seen the episode on Saturday. No one but Whovians will be there, I'm sure, and no one was going to wait! It's crazy though...I think I would have had to go all the way to New York to see it in the cinema on saturday and since it seemed like it was only in 3D everywhere, there was no point.

I watched a short film, about a half-hour long, in 3D when I was at Disney World last year. I had to take the 3D glasses off part of the way through, and it took quite a while for me to get my equilibrium back after it was over. I was so queasy! So, no 3D movies for me! I even have trouble with the short 3D segments during John's panto but at least they are short and I can always just take the glasses off and wait for it to be over.

If they had only had the important bits like the Gallifreyan picture in 3D (with instructions on screen: put your 3D glasses on now!) I could have gone, but with the whole thing in 3D? I think not.

I haven't noticed Doctor Who episodes airing faster on BBCAmerica, but they do love to leave out bits of episodes to make more room for commercials.

[identity profile] dieastra.livejournal.com 2013-11-26 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Because of the high interest, some cinemas in Germany show it again on December 9th. They never shall tell us again there would be no interest. The cinema that told us this and at first refused to play it, ended up with 175 sold seats in the first showing and 90 sold seats in the second showing... not bad, eh? Especially compared to the just 20 seats they sold for the "MacBeth" from the National Theatre with Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston...

Was that Disney movie a regular movie or one of those where they throw you around in your seat, like in a roller coaster? Somehow I imagine that to be worse than an ordinary movie. Aside from 3-D, things have massively changed during the past years.

I realized this when I re-watched some old TV-programme from the Eighties. Not that long ago but it felt so different. The camera lingered loooong on the actor's face, without him saying anything. Long pans over the landscape also. Everything was slow and steady. Nowadays, the camera moves around all the time, shaky hand camera, which can make you queasy indeed. And there are so many quick cuts, it's hard to follow what happens.

Yeah, they cut out stuff but I read complaints once or twice indeed about faster speed as well.

[identity profile] teamrodent.livejournal.com 2013-11-26 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Astra: "You should have gone before we started, what are you, Five?!?"

No, Five would have remembered to use the bathroom before leaving. ;]p

BEST COMMENT EVER!

You win the internet. Seriously. Can't stop laughing ;)

I just heard that some cinemas in Germany are airing it again on December 9th because of the huge interest. They NEVER shall tell us again there would be no interest! (that's what our local cinema told us when we asked, hence the need to drive to another town. In the end two cinemas in Dresden aired it as well, and despite being late to the party the sold out one viewing and half of the second.)

I'm so envious of your adventure. Well, I envy all Doctor Who fans who were there when the celebration took place :) I became a fan last year and missed all of it. Of course I watched the episode, some documentaries and interviews, and people wrote a lot about the 2013 celebration. I imagine the whole year was special for Doctor Who fans!

Tha Adipose is so sweet!

I know what you mean! I also have regrets about missing things as I was too late for them. It happens. Thankfully at least via DVD we can still watch the stuff, as opposite to stage work *still angry about myself for missing JB in La Cage*

Were you also able to see the special things, that came before the movie? The Strax introduction, where he told about the popcorn, and Matt and David and the 100th special in 12D? And the chin? I think there was a link on youtube once. Or was it included in the DVD?

The Adipose belongs to my brother, I once gave it to him as a gift ;) He is so cuddly. If you want to buy one, make sure to get the original, which you can recognize by the little tooth in the mouth. There are lots of fake ones out there actually.

The fun thing is, now reading it back - at the time I only had the Big Chief Eleventh Doctor, but now that I have the Tenth Doctor as well, he does indeed come with tiny 3D glasses! From that one episode, the blue and red kind. Too bad I didn't have them back then, that would have been hilarious.

Oh, what I didn't tell in this story - shortly before the end the screen suddenly went black. We still had sound but no picture. After they realized it, they stopped the broadcast, rewinded, and started again, so we saw the rest not exactly live. But in the time they tried to fix it, a lot of people in the audience got out their sonic screewdrivers, it was lovly to hear the noises! Also lots of people were dressed up in costume, lots of Tens and Elevens and also some Fourths could be seen. And girls in TARDIS dresses. This was the most fun for me. And I made some people turn their heads and grin when I placed my dolls in the seat ;)

In the beginning they only had reserved small rooms as they thought they would not sell many tickets, but they had to add more rooms and bigger rooms and a second screening later in the evening, I had no idea there were so many Who fans in Germany. In the end it was aired in 38 cinemas just in our country.

I love you inventing new dialogue ;) LOL

Meet you at the 100th anniversary then!

[identity profile] alumfelga.livejournal.com 2015-08-23 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I've seen the introduction. It was hillarious :) I can't possibly imagine the joy of audience when Matt Smith showed up and then David Tennant. And if the excitement wasn't already on the highest level, the mysterious back of John Hurt. What a video.

The little tooth is co cute, you can easily notice when a plushie hasn't got one. I can't imagine how Russell T Davies could be so sure that people will buy a toy of a creature originally made of human fat but he was right. The Adipose are just adorable.

"But in the time they tried to fix it, a lot of people in the audience got out their sonic screewdrivers, it was lovly to hear the noises!"
This is co cool. I imagine people pointing at the screen with their sonic screwdrivers, trying to fix the screen. It was bad the transmission was stopped but you got a bonding time :)

"Meet you at the 100th anniversary then!"
In 12D, with 3D glasses for all!
