I should watch The Boys also, I hear good things about it & I am a Karl Urban fan.
I don't even remember the Atlantis finale. A lot of people were very sad when it was cancelled but I was glad I didn't have to bother anymore. I liked the first 3 seasons but then also it got dark. They did not explore planets anymore, only spaceships and never found the light switch. They also got new uniforms instead of the colors. And the stories only involved the same themes. Replicators and Wraith. Boring.
And don't get me started on the last 2 Stargate seasons. That was not my show anymore. They had originally planned it as a new show but the network wanted the longest run sci-fi show & then cancelled it right after the 200th episode.
There was so much hate in the fandom at the time. Old fans against new fans. New fans had come from the Farscape fandom (which got cancelled for more Stargate so they were angry too) for Ben Browder and Claudia Black and did not care about what was before. What had been a good drama show became a comedy. What had been sci-fi became fantasy. No, I didn't like it. For me the show ends with season 8.
And that has nothing to do with RDA leaving. I was willing to give them a fair chance, to introduce new characters and new stories. But they screwed up, and worse, they did not listen to the fan complains. Only then we realized how much work RDA also did behind the scenes that we never knew. Now the writers became their own producers and nobody asked about plotholes anymore.
Then we got Stargate Universe which was even darker and I gave up after a few episodes.
I didn't touch my figures or DVDs for years, I really was burned out. I found new friends in the Doctor Who and Torchwood fandom. Only many years later I watched some earlier Stargate episodes again and realized why I used to love that show so much. When Jack O'Neill was a serious soldier and leader and not a clown.
I still haven't watched the last Doctor Who season with Peter Capaldi. And I had so looked forward to him as I loved his character in "Children of Earth". Moffat screwed that up like he did with Sherlock. Too complicated stories, I simply didn't care anymore.
The fun thing is, that Richard Dean Anderson is both a Simpons and Family Guy fan. I used to not like the Simpsons as well but checked it out thinking if he thinks it's good... and fell in love with it. But I never could see the appeal with Family Guy. Every time I stumbled about it they seemed to vomit...
I have finally caved now and watch it daily. There is still a lot of stuff I don't like but underneath I can see what they are trying to do and some of the earlier stories are actually quite good and meaningful. And I adore whenever Seth is singing, and as he voices several characters, sometimes he sings a duet with himself, and big orchestra, which is exactly the kind of music that I also love.
Honestly, you wouldn't think so from the kind of jokes he does, but Seth is definitely one of the good guys. I see it in the tweets he writes. Smart, thoughtful, caring, heart in the right place. I think he's grown up a little now, he feels this is what he always had wanted to do and I just hope that the public opinion about him might change over time as well. First Orville season the critics tore it apart but with the second season they also finally understood what he is trying to do. We got a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is very rare apparently!
They also got nominated for an Emmy this year for their special effects team. Of course they did not have a chance against Game of Thrones but still were very excited as they do it on a much smaller budget.
He wanted to cancel Family Guy years ago, he is not involved with the writing anymore, just does the voices. Fox wants to keep going and he also says if he cancels now a lot of people will be out of work - writers, drawers, voice actors - and he can't do that.
You will also find some former Star Trek actors in the Orville, as well as former Star Trek writers and Jonathan Frakes as a director behind the scenes. The whole thing is a love letter. I'm looking forward to properly talking about it with you! And hopefully once I have you converted you will spread the word as well. We need to get more people on board.
