Someone posted a picture of a miniature toilet and I learnt something that I didn't know before. In America the sign carved into the wood of the door is a crescent moon. In Germany it is heart shaped. Now I wonder which shapes there are in other countries? Please do tell my international friends!

The German version also is lovingly referred to as "Herzlhäusl" (hearthouse)

Here is the post of the guy on FB, hope you can see it: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1675907215955924/permalink/1872781079601869/

And here is the German version, used in my garden scene: http://dieastra.livejournal.com/156252.html

- There is a Star Trek TOS episode called "Requiem for Methuselah" and it is spelled Methuselah and not Methusaleh as I first had it because I thought it would be similar to the German word Methusalem. Can someone tell me why the difference?

- In the season 4 Doctor Who episode "The Unicorn and the Wasp" where they meet Agatha Christie and also explain about her lost days (which I hadn't known about until watching this episode so never say watching TV is not educational) they apparently had several of her book titles worked into the dialogue. Since I don't even know all of them in German, let alone in English, this had gone by me completely. Here's a list:

"Roberts and Davies held an unofficial contest to see how many references to Christie's works could be inserted. Titles that were noted were: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd; Why Didn't They Ask Evans; The Body in the Library; The Secret Adversary; N or M?; Nemesis; Cat Among the Pigeons; Dead Man's Folly; They Do It With Mirrors; Appointment with Death; Cards on the Table; Sparkling Cyanide; Endless Night; Crooked House; Death in the Clouds; The Moving Finger; Taken at the Flood; Death Comes as the End; Murder on the Orient Express and The Murder at the Vicarage. A deleted scene referred to The Man in the Brown Suit, referring to the Doctor's clothing. The narrative itself parallels several of Christie's novels: the jewel theft storyline parallels The Secret of Chimneys; Miss Chandrakala's death was influenced by And Then There Were None; and the Colonel's revelation that he was not disabled paralleled a key concept of The Pale Horse.[9] In an email conversation with journalist Benjamin Cook, Davies admitted he had initially added a reference to the original title of And Then There Were None, Ten Little Niggers, but decided it was too risky."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unicorn_and_the_Wasp#Continuity

(And now I want to read all those Agatha Christie novels. They had a small library where I was at vacation and I already did "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" last week. One down, only 19 to go ;) )

- in general, I read up on the Venus de Milo and David by Michelangelo, as I also did back then on The Thinker, after getting my action figures. Never say buying action figures is not educational!

In 1914 Paris became a World War I battleground. To protect shoppers during a potential German air raid, shopkeepers applied a sticky tape to display windows which would prevent the glass from shattering dangerously in all directions. For the remainder of the war, Parisian shopfronts competed for the most artistic use of anti-bombardment tape in their window designs. Some lovely and really creative pictures can be found here: Windows of war - how parisians prepared for attack
(Btw. we also have the siren going off. A lot of these had been dismantled after the fall of Eastern Germany - they were there to warn us about an attack from the West, you see. I've always said to attack on Wednesdays on 1 PM would be the perfect cover! But in recent years many got re-installed as it was found out they need a warning system against floods)

The same page then told me I'd also be interested in France built a Replica of Paris in WWI A fake city complete with train and lights for the Germans to bomb. Brilliant! (and I'm saying that as a German) Let's all create fake cities so that those that feel the need to drop a bomb once in a while have a playground!

Supergirl in the TV series Supergirl has an aunt called Astra. Why has nobody told me this? Do I need to watch the show now? I feel a bit too old for teenager superhero girls.

In a newspaper article about German composer Johann Gottlieb Nauman who lived and died in Dresden I learnt that Amadeus is the Latin form of the name Gottlieb. Amore - Liebe - Love and Deus - Gott - God https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Gottlieb_Naumann

I read an article in the newspaper about the megalodon. It lived millions of years ago. So far I knew the name only from the movie "Shark Attack III" with John Barrowman (he was young and needed the money ;) ) but hadn't realized that it had been a real shark! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megalodon

[livejournal.com profile] tinnny has this great meme once a month where she writes something she has learnt for each day of the month. I won't do it like that, just randomly add new things I learnt. Let's see how many that will be over a month (I've started late this month, half of it is over already)

- I watched the movie "Bobby" about the last day in the life of Robert Kennedy and the people in the hotel he was shot. One girl wanted to marry her class mate to save his life so he was more likely to be shipped to Germany instead of Vietnam. But because many did this it was changed later: http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story?id=132298&page=1

- They only had showers with warm water in Alcatraz so the prisoners could not get used to the cold water and swim away: http://www.toptenz.net/awesome-reason-alcatraz-prison-hot-showers.php

- I thought I knew about art but before [livejournal.com profile] tinnny's post here I had never before heard of Fauvism. I do like colorful art though! I used to be more strict and only preferred art that looked "real" (the more real, the better, like Canaletto or Spitzweg) but lately I appreciate everything where I at least can recognize what it is supposed to be and don't mind a more modern approach. I can't wrap my head around just colorful lines or a white square. I can't help thinking "I could do that as well" ;)

- The UK had cool kitchen clocks in the 50s - 70s which is not only a normal wall clock but also includes a kitchen timer. Never seen anything like this before [livejournal.com profile] cookielaura posted about them: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71oWp382G6L._SL1000_.jpg

- The difference between "thou" and "you": "You" is formal, used when talking to someone of a higher status. "Thou" and "thee" are more informal, used to address someone of a lower class. When Kent adresses King Lear as "thou" he was very insulting. When Hamlet refuses to address his mother as "though", he is being distant and confrontational. http://hatorl.tumblr.com/post/141586018183/quoting-shakespeare-to-ducks-goodticklebrain
I guess for Germans with the difference between "du" and "Sie" the concept is easier to grasp! Why has nobody ever told me this?

- The Easter bunny is a German thing. Who would've thought? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easter_Bunny

- I watched a German movie about Adolf and Rudolf Dassler, the brothers that first worked together but then hated each other and founded Adidas and Puma. It was well done and I learnt a lot that I hadn’t known before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Dassler

It's all [livejournal.com profile] tinnny's fault. Instead of going to bed, I am sitting here thinking up things with the letter S ;) It was great fun but I cheated a bit with looking at lists of movies and cities. I'll add more if I think of more but here it is for now:

Something I hate:

need to go to German for this one: Spinner (in general, I think we are all a little bit wacko, me included, but some people are just way over the top)
spiders & snakes – well I don’t really hate them, but I am not particularly fond of them either

Something I love:

shells (whenever I am at a beach, I collect some more)
snails
Scottish
Schokolade (don’t think I need to translate that? ;) )

Somewhere I've been:

Scotland
Sherlock Holmes Museum London
Sweeney Todd musical London with Michael Ball
St. Petersburg (still Leningrad back then)
St. Wolfgang
Sassnitz (I was 3 at the time though)
Schmilka
Schöna
Schöneck
Schwerin
Sebnitz
Seiffen
Sonneberg (lovely toy and doll museum!)
Stralsund (can you tell I am raiding the list of German cities with S LOL)
Osterholz-Scharmbeck
Spreewald (we went for canoeing there in the canals)
Bad Salzdetfurth (for Stargate conventions)
Saalfelder Feengrotten (famous dripstone cave)
Saxony (I live here ;) )

Somewhere I'd like to go:

Star(ling) City (to meet Arrow and probably Malcolm Merlyn – depending on in which mood he is though)
Stettin

A film I like:

High Society
Staatsanwälte küsst man nicht (Legal Eagles)

Other movies and tv shows with S I like:

Star Trek
Star Trek Continues
Stargate
Sherlock
Superman – the Adventures of Lois & Clark
Simpsons
Sandmännchen
Six Feet Under
Shark Attack III (all John Barrowman’s fault)
South and North (I mean North and South of course ;) )
Shaun the Sheep

Things I like:

sandwiches
singing
smiling people
Shakespeare

Music by:

Scott Gill’s husband – hah! (John Barrowman for those not in the know)
Frank Sinatra

Oh, I almost forgot! The list won't be very long I guess.

January had me back to Glasgow for the third time, for the pantomime "Cinderella" with John Barrowman. We took trips to Loch Lomond and Alloway (Brig O'Doon!) but I did not sleep there so it doesn't count.

In May I slept in London for the Torchwood: Miracle Day convention. Oh the fun we had with them at the picture taking! John allowed me to touch his biceps and showed me how to shoot a banana, and Kai even picked me up.

Two weeks later we flew to London again, but then proceeded to travel and sleep first in Ipswich (lovely little town, interesting where fandom leads you) and then in Cardiff, to see John Barrowman in concert. With us getting pictures at the stage door and my five minutes fame of being printed in the Ipswich Star newspaper

In July I visited a friend in Osnabrück and slept on her couch. We did lovely action figure theatre there, this Stargate/Star Trek crossover dinner is one of the things we did that time.

September saw me back to London to see Benedict Cumberbatch live on the threatre stage in "Hamlet". Nothing to link here though, as we didn't even try the stage door. I heard it was madness, and I already got my pic with him last year

And that's it for this year! Tonight I won't sleep in my own bed either, but just across the street at my parent's, in my old room.

Where have you slept this year?

Apologies, I am a bit late with this. I had to wait till my Doctor arrived, and then Paris was attacked, and I didn't feel like funny pictures.
This one is for [profile] alumfelga ;) According to her entry here (READ IT!) http://alumfelga.livejournal.com/6658.html there is a meme going around with the Hybrid theme in this Doctor Who season.

I haven't watched yesterday's episode yet, so please no spoilers. Just wanted to get this out here.

21st October, 2015 is where Marty McFly travelled to. The movie(s) get(s) played everywhere today - in TV and in cinemas.

Here is me in the original DeLorean, at The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Peterborough, 2012.

In the evening, after everyone else had gone home already, John went around to have some fun as well:

I can as well! Usually my fics are much shorter, but this one has 10 pages and over 3000 words. Just waiting for the beta and then it will get posted.

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] tinnny!

go to the 7th page of your current WIP, and copy/paste 7 lines starting from the 7th on the page

“If you have something to say, then say it! Then I’ll decide what happens to you.”

All of a sudden, all the fight seemed to drain out of Spock. His shoulders fell slightly and his eyes went back to look at a far distance. His voice sounded tired when he asked, “Permission to speak freely?”

“Permission granted.” Jim was curious what would come next.

“You were not just simply in love with Rayna. You were totally smitten. Time was running out. The longer we waited to bring the ryetalyn on board, the more in danger were all the sick people on this ship. We should have left immediately, yet you deemed it necessary to get into a fight over a girl you barely knew...
