Introducing: Gotham wave 1
Dec. 27th, 2016 04:29 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So I stumbled about the action figures of "Gotham" that come with some awesome backgrounds and I figured I should at least have a look into the series before I buy them (not that buying figures just for the accessories has stopped me before *cough* "Primeval" *cough*). I started somewhere in the middle of season 2 on German TV and now have gone back to the beginning to do it properly. I read that season 2 is better than season 1 so sometimes it's better to come in later. I rather like it. Yes, it is sometimes camp and over the top, but I like the actors and characters and the sarcasm in the dialogues. I always love a bit of humor in my TV series. Grumpy Harvey Bullock was an instant like and I love how the relationship between the the old and new cop develops over time. The way of storytelling is similar to "Arrow", but there are no warehouse fights and no magic. Kinda refreshing to see good old quick shooting instead of drawn out hand-to-hand-combat. It's the more realistic superhero series that I always wanted "Arrow" to be.
(Also, Alfred Pennyworth is played by Sean Pertwee, the son of Jon Pertwee who was the third Doctor. I'm so glad I started to watch in English as in the German dubbing I would have missed this lovely British accent)
I want to introduce you to the figures of wave 1, which are Det. James "Jim" Gordon, Selina "Cat" Kyle and Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin. Click the cut to see more explanations and pictures!
So, Jim Gordon who one day becomes Commissioner if you know your "Batman". I think they did the face very well. Here is a picture of the original, played by Ben McKenzie

The picture above shows the double jointed knees which seem to be standard these days and make them very flexible. If I think back at my first "Stargate" figures that did have no knees at all... (although it fit Jack's character who always complained about a stiff knee LOL)
Gordon has many joints, the hips, elbows and shoulders turn into all directions but he suffers the fate of most figures in that he cannot hold his weapon firmly with both hands:

But the best part are the feet which also turn around everywhere. My other figures would topple over if I tried this wide stance but he has still his soles flat to the ground:

Even his tie is sculpted seperatedly:

And the jacket is not in the way of him sitting properly which is always a plus:

He comes with this awesome environment:

Next Selina Kyle, who will become Catwoman one day. Played by Camren Bicondova
I think she's rather cute! I originally did not want to watch this series as I was afraid it would be similar to "Smallville" - too many teenagers and high school drama. But both her and Bruce are actually really good and the rest are mostly adult characters.

She comes with a bottle of milk but this is not why I got her - this is:

Put together with Gordon's half you get this. All pieces can be seperated for easy storage:

Finally, the Penguin, played by Robin Lord Taylor
From Batman movies you may know him as an old small thick guy, but I really like this version of him. Very interesting portrait. He reminds me a bit of the Simm!Master and Sherlock's Moriarty, so if you are into that kind of weird bad guys, you should check him out. Originally I did not want to get him, as I was not interested in the dock he comes with, but the actor's interpretation of the character has won me over:

He comes with some extra hands to hold the accessories, the umbrella and the apple. I just watched the pilot a couple of days ago and can see where all the other things - Gordon's trash cans and Selina's milk bottle and also the pier - are coming from, but I can't remember the significance of the apple right now. Guess I'll have to watch again.

This is the pier from the finale of the pilot:

And this is the whole wave 1. The fourth wave just got announced so you can bet there will be more and I already have all kind of ideas how to use the backgrounds for my other figures.

Date: 2016-12-29 05:22 pm (UTC)If you don't watch then I can probably spoiler you? Because the first episode I saw and that got me hooked, had Jim Gordon kill a man at the end. A bad guy whom they tried to give a proper trial, but he got out of it like politicans usually do. I was really shocked that Gordon, who is the one good cop in this corrupt city, would do that, even if there are reasons, and I look forward to find out what it will cost him later as surely it will haunt him. He has overstepped a line.
And now that I started at the beginning, where he is all fresh and new and enthusiastic, it will be interesting to see what made him become so dark. Also I just love the relationship between him and Bullock. It's worth watching for their banter alone. I always love banter.
Maybe you want to give it another try when it comes back?

Date: 2017-02-05 11:07 am (UTC)I stumbled upon these figures when I was looking for a diorama that would suit my budget and space restrictions and I thought the alleyway/fire escape piece would do the trick. Then, when I started looking into the characters themselves, I got interested in watching the show, which I just started yesterday. :D So it was very cool to discover that you'd taken a bit of the same trip, lol! ;)
I just got Selina and Jim's figures in but didn't have time to open up Jim's box just yet. However, I was disappointed that Selina's right leg is completely frozen, none of the cuts at her thigh or boot/ankle can move and her leg is twisted so her foot points inward and she can't stand unaided at all. :(
I'm going to try applying some heat carefully to the thigh joint and see if I can get her leg to turn outwards enough for her to stand but I'm worried I'll still end up breaking it. :S Wish me luck! I guess I could glue her leg back on if it snaps off but I'd hate to not be able for her to pose in any other way than standing straight up. (Of course, right now that's more than she can do. O_O ;) )
Anyway, I just thought it was cool that we'd both found these figures and this show in similar ways so I thought I'd say hi while I was here! :D ♥

Date: 2017-02-05 03:51 pm (UTC)Watching this show, I have now completely fallen for Sean Pertwee. At first of course it was Gordon, the hero but then episode 1x17 came along with some background on him and I suddenly was hooked on the butler. You'll see ;) I already started to watch other stuff with him. He's really great (and he seems to die a lot in his roles). Again I have no idea how I was able to miss him so completely so far.
Did you see that I already customized an Alfred with rolled up sleeves? http://dieastra.livejournal.com/247366.html
And I already did some scenes from the pilot here: http://dieastra.livejournal.com/244735.html
I can't wait to build a proper Wayne mansion with all the furniture I have. I want to do panelled walls first. Also at the moment I am crafting some steal beams / girders for the police precinct. I'll tag you once I post these!
Yes, I say, apply heat, I usually put them into hot water, that should do the trick. I have once broken Oliver Queen's elbow when I was in a hurry but usually doing it carefully it should work. Mine were a bit stiff at first too. I love that they have so many joints. If I compare them to the Stargate figures, and even the Star Trek figs which already had more joints are very restricted against these.
As for backgrounds, I also want to recommend this to you: http://news.toyark.com/2017/01/26/extreme-sets-deranged-alleyway-pop-photo-review-237578#images
Next payday I am going to buy this. This is the alleyway, just one example of what's available (others are Wrestling ring, subway station, 3D building, some Japanese paper walls, section 9...) It's just cardboard but looks very realistic and can be combined and set up in several ways. Just look at the pictures. I think it will be great for both the Gotham and also Arrow figures.
Here you can see what else is available but it's too expensive to buy them all: http://www.extreme-sets.com/
I already have so many ideas about how to mix and match my props and scenes. I was just about to post another one, with Alfred in the hospital bed. Stay tuned! And let's talk about more once you have seen more of it! I'm sure it'll hook you. I love all the actors and characters. Also I must say, it is nice being able to binge-watch it and not wait a whole week for the cliffhangers. I have finished season 1 now, about to start season 2.
Do you have any previous knowledge about the Batman universe?
I also wonder if you have similar problems like I to put the wall piece into the ground piece. They were very stiff at first and didn't want to go in. I tried and tried again and slowly it went better. Just as a warning. I was actually thinking about filing the holes a bit bigger. I got more such wall pieces with the Bullock figure, these fit together much better and easier.
